For a variety of reasons, couples sometimes decide that they should enter into an agreement that spells out their respective rights in the event their relationship ends.

A premarital agreement allows couples to address the division of property in the event of a divorce. Such an agreement can also address inheritances, gifts, income, attorney fees, and, with limited exceptions, spousal support. Unmarried couples may also choose to address these issues through a Cohabitation Agreement.

Every relationship is unique. Sometimes, the fact that one partner even raises the idea of a Premarital or Cohabitation Agreement is unsettling to the other partner.
